Turning Back Time in Penrith | VE Day 75
Penrith is gearing up to ‘Turn Back Time’ on Friday 8th May. The Town Council is excited and pleased to be leading the event and working closely with a stakeholder group which includes Brougham Hall Wartime Weekend, the Business Improvement District and community groups to organise a fantastic Bank Holiday of 1940s entertainment to commemorate and celebrate VE Day 75, and as an international celebration of peace – A time to remember, reflect and pay tribute to the millions who played such a vital part in achieving it.
Penrith’s town centre will be transformed back to the era with free street activities, vintage vehicle parade, live music, drama performances, a street picnic party and much more.
Organisations, groups, charities and businesses have been invited to take part in this significant event. The Town Council are really keen for this to be a community event inclusive of all ages, groups and organisations and businesses.
We are encouraging shops and street facing businesses to take part by decorating shop windows, asking salons to do hair and make-up of the period, asking charity shops to create a 1940s clothes rail and food outlets to include recipes on the menu of the era. We will also be encouraging anyone coming to the event to dress in period clothes.
A free bus will shuttle people between the town centre and Brougham on Friday and Saturday, with Brougham Hall Wartime Weekend running all weekend. A special church service will also be held on Sunday 10th May.
Come into Penrith, have fun and get involved! We’d love to see you there
